Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the Warrior Alumni Mentorship Program?
The program connects alumni with high school seniors to provide guidance, career insight, and support as students prepare for life after graduation.

How long does the program run?
The formal program runs from February through May, with the hope that many relationships continue informally beyond that timeframe.

What is the expected time commitment?
Mentors should plan for at least one scheduled session with their mentee during the program. Additional check-ins are welcome and encouraged based on your availability and your mentee’s needs.

Who should initiate the first contact?
Students are encouraged to reach out first, but many hesitate. If you do not hear from your mentee within 1–2 weeks, you should feel free to contact them directly to introduce yourself.

What kinds of activities can mentors offer?
Conversations about career paths, college decisions, résumé development, interview preparation, and professional etiquette are typical. If your workplace allows, you may offer job shadowing, workplace visits, or internships. Students are permitted one excused school absence for a weekday shadowing experience.

How should mentors structure their conversations?
Keep discussions focused on the student’s goals, interests, and challenges. Share practical advice, personal experience, and realistic guidance. A balance of encouragement and constructive insight is ideal.

Are there professional expectations for mentors?
Yes. Maintain a professional relationship that supports the student’s growth. Set appropriate boundaries and keep interactions centered on career and personal development topics.

What if the student is not engaging?
If your student is slow to respond, you may reach out to them again. If engagement remains low, contact the program coordinator for support.

What if the mentor–mentee match is not a good fit?
If the pairing does not feel appropriate or productive, notify the program coordinator at dcsalumni@warrior.us or the phone number in your welcome email. Adjustments can be made to ensure a positive experience.

Who can I contact for help?
For any concerns regarding engagement, scheduling, or the mentor–mentee match, contact the program coordinator at dcsalumni@warriorweb.us or the phone number in your welcome email.
